Wondering what the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team has been up to since winning the World Cup in Canada last month? Aside from accompanying Taylor Swift on stage at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey last month, they’re crushing it at the soccer stadium again—starting with the first match of their 10-game Victory Tour in Pittsburgh last night, where they won 8-0 over Costa Rica.
Heather O’Reilly scored the first goal in the fourth minute, followed by a hat trick from Christen Press, one goal by Julie Johnston, a second goal from O’Reilly and one from Whitney Engen. And while Press’ three points were extremely impressive, the most memorable goal may have been from Pittsburgh’s hometown hero, Meghan Klingenberg. After running to her bench in celebration, she was tossed a “Terrible Towel”—also known as a Pittsburgh Steelers’ yellow towel, waved in celebration when the football team scores.

“I love Pittsburgh and being here was just incredible and to be able to bring my teammates and my friends and coaches here to experience what an incredible city and incredible fan base we have is really incredible,” Klingenberg said after the game. “You knew Pittsburgh was going to show up in force and be extremely loud and waving their terrible towels.”
And show up they did. The game drew a crowd of 44,208 fans, more than ever before on U.S. soil for a women’s game that meant nothing but to celebrate what’s to come. (The only other games to bring in this type of fan base were the World Cup and the Olympics!). Yet again, these ladies are making history. Press and other teammates believe the support will only grow as the focus becomes the Olympics in Brazil next summer, which the USWNT is planning to qualify for. As for now, they’re just enjoying the victories.
We can’t wait to keep watching! And in the meantime, we’d like to give a shout out to midfielder, Megan Rapinoe who got engaged last week—congratulations! And the five players named to Women’s World Cup All-Star Squad today: Rapinoe, Johnston, Solo, Klingenberg and Lloyd.
